The Cranlana Programme

The Cranlana Programme is a non-partisan, not-for-profit organisation, initiated by The Myer Foundation in 1993. Its broad objective is to cultivate wisdom in leadership.

The Cranlana Programme offers participants with senior responsibilities the opportunity to take part in a unique programme of seminars, directed at enhancing their understanding of the philosophical, ethical and social issues central to creating a just society.

The central activity of the Cranlana Programme is the six-day colloquium. These are led by expert moderators and the methodology is a disciplined process specifically designed to enable participants to test their thinking against complex frameworks. Key issues, addressed in depth, include the origin and nature of justice, the place of ethical and historical perspectives in leadership and public policy debate and changing perceptions of liberty, equality, community and the ‘good society’. Participants are challenged to consider alternative views, to practise the skills of practical reasoning and respectful debate and to learn the value of considered reading and informed reflection in dealing with complex social, political and economic issues.

Since its inception, the organisation has run some 60 high-level colloquia, 30 two-day symposia on topics such as justice and society, power and ethics, the value of democracy, and business and ethics, plus a number of issue-specific seminars, lectures and roundtable policy dialogues.
