50 years ago, in 1959, Sidney Myer’s vision for an outdoor concert venue for Victorians was realised, with the opening of the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Melbourne’s first major purpose-built outdoor venue.
On 12 February 2009 a free orchestral concert by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, recreating the opening concert at the Bowl was held, followed by a weekend of free celebratory events including a celebratory RocKwiz concert, a concert in the Sidney Myer Free Concerts series, and a family day. A special exhibition, complemented by an online exhibition, documenting the building of the Bowl and its contribution to the cultural life of Melbourne was also developed.
