Florey Neuroscience Institutes

The relationship between The Myer Foundation and the Howard Florey Institute goes back to and beyond the beginnings of both organisations.

Recently amalgamating with the Brain Research Institute and the National Stroke Research Institute to form the Florey Neuroscience Institutes, the Howard Florey Institute began as the Howard Florey laboratories. Kenneth and Baillieu Myer through the newly formed Myer Foundation, together with their friend Ian Potter, provided the first funds to enable the construction of the laboratories.

Kenneth Myer’s commitment to the Howard Florey Institute continued through his lifetime, and on his death his son, Martyn Myer was appointed to the Board. Martyn was on the board for over fifteen years and during this time served as Treasurer, Vice President and President.

Likewise, The Myer Foundation’s support of the Howard Florey Institute has been one of the flagship commitments of the Foundation. The relationship continues with the support of the newly formed Florey Neuroscience Institutes. Recent gifts made by the Directors of The Myer Foundation and as part of the 2009 Commemorative Grants Program total over $5 million.
