"To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed."
Theodore Roosevelt, Seventh Annual Message, December 3, 1907.
Sustainability has been defined as “practices and development that meet the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.”1
Our environment is precious and fragile. Our ecological footprint is large and unsustainable. Human activity has led to changes in biodiversity at a faster rate in the past 50 years “…than at any time in human history, and the drivers of change… are either steady, show no evidence of declining over time, or are increasing in intensity.”2
We believe that targeted and strategic action is needed, and that it is timely to consider broad issues of sustainability in rural and regional Australia, amongst indigenous and non-indigenous communities.
